alt "Like Von Donnersmarck's remarkable 2006 debut feature, 'The Lives of Others', 'Never Look Away' burrows into the heart of a bitterly divided Germany and asks what role, if any, art can play in times of political chaos and moral confusion...It is stately and composed, clear-eyed and engrossing."
-- Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times

Historical drama/thriller; In German and Russian with English subtitles; 188 minutes; 2019

"In his new film, Donnersmarck presents another period drama, this one a portrait of the (fictional) artist Kurt Barnert as a young man. The film begins before the violence of World War II takes over, and continues through the founding of the German Democratic Republic and the construction of the Berlin Wall, the epic, tragic sweep of twentieth-century Germany. Kurt's artistic development and personal history closely mirror that of Gerhard Richter, one of Germany's most celebrated living artists."
